Flower Festival 2008

Home

On Tuesday 12th August the church was a hive of activity as the Llanelli Floral Art Society worked their wonders creating interpretations of short quotes they had been given. What they produced were not just beautiful but also deeply spiritual visions of the scriptural texts. For instance the Holy Spirit took on form with a mass of red blooms arranged through two black metal stands, while the breaking of bread at the Eucharist was a display in red and white and incorporating bread, grapes and ears of wheat all arranged around the altar. One treasure was the statue of st. Therese of Lisieux which had been damaged in the fire in St. John Lloyds school and which was rescued and preserved by Dyfed Joinery. It stood surround by white flowers in the entrance as the final point of the journey round the festival.

This festival, however, was not just a chance to fill the church with flowers, beautiful as this was. It also served as a means of collecting money for the Ty Bryngwyn, the Llanelli Hospice, a charity which supported so many families in their time of need. Dr. Mary Llewellyn Morgan opened the festival at a short service attended by the Mayor and Lady Mayoress and a large number of guests. Meeting people it was a delight to see how they had been inspired by the quotes and the ways these had been interpreted and the effect this had on them. After viewing all the displays it was a pleasure to sit together in the Church Hall and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and partake of a slice of cake or a couple of welsh cakes.
